Equipment is becoming more frequently exposed to the elements as more facets of daily life digitize or become automated. Fans that work well with interior enclosures often will break down in such environments. The degree of environmental protection in electronics is measured as in terms of Ingress Protection (IP). See the following reference chart to see what the numbers actually mean:

Q: How will I know the IP rating? Any device that does have environmental protection will advertise its IP rating. For example, a fan that markets as IP67 will be rated by the manufacturer as dust tight and able to be submerged up to one meter in water for thirty minutes.
