I have searched for the quietest long-lasting 40 mm fan available, and the SilenX Ixtrema Pro IXP-13-14 seems to be the solution. Arctic Cooling is a good brand, too, but does not make a 40 mm size. My application does not require great airflow, so this fan works well on 9 VDC. The mean time between failure stats I received from a Silenx rep are amazing, too.
